Service principal holds a tenant-takeover permission (T1098.003)

This service principal holds an application permission that leads to Global Administrator, either directly or through another object such as an app, a group or a policy.

Why it matters

Whoever holds this app's credential, or the vendor's, can use the permission without any user. Some of these permissions grant an admin role outright; others reach one in a few steps.

How GraphnAI finds it

It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Microsoft Entra ID.

It reads:

  • The directory attributes servicePrincipalType, appOwnerClass, appOwnerOrganizationId, verifiedPublisher and accountEnabled
  • 4 more GraphnAI analyses

How Select Fire™ fixes it

How to fix it

Remove this permission if the app doesn't need it. If the app might have been misused, review what it changed and who controls its credentials.

What Select Fire changes

Select Fire opens from the finding and simulates each change on your live graph before anything changes in your directory.

  1. Remove app role assignment For service principals.Manual: you approve each change one at a time, and no automation runs it.

The app loses the permission at once. Anything it does with that permission stops working.

By hand: In Microsoft Entra, open the enterprise application's permissions and remove the permission. For another organization's app, disable the service principal first; don't delete it, because deleting removes consent.
