Key credentials on, or writable to, a Tier 0 object (T1556.007)

This Tier 0 object has key credentials, or an account outside Tier 0 can add them. A key credential lets its holder authenticate as this object without the password. Windows Hello keys look the same as an attacker's key, so every key is listed.

Why it matters

Anyone holding a key credential, or able to add one, can authenticate as this Tier 0 object.

How GraphnAI finds it

It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Active Directory.

It reads:

  • The directory attributes objectSid, userAccountControl, accountEnabled and msDS-KeyCredentialLink
  • Directory permissions (access control entries)
  • The privilege tier classification
  • The forest each domain belongs to

Tiered Fidelity™ level: Constrained

Every finding from this check carries the Constrained level.

  1. TheoreticalConfigured in the directory. Nothing else checked.
  2. ConstrainedThis checkA constraint on it has been checked.
  3. ValidatedTelemetry has seen it in use.

How Select Fire™ fixes it

How to fix it

Remove key credentials you don't recognize, and remove the permission to add them from accounts outside Tier 0.

What Select Fire changes

Select Fire opens from the finding and simulates each change on your live graph before anything changes in your directory.

  1. Remove the permissionSemi-Auto: you authorize each change. Full-Auto never runs it.

The listed accounts can no longer add key credentials to this object. A tool that registers keys through one of them stops working. You can undo the change.

By hand: Check each key credential on this object, remove any you don't recognize, and remove the permission to add them from accounts outside Tier 0.
