Account restricted to DES encryption (T1558)

The account uses only DES for Kerberos, a cipher broken decades ago. Checks enabled accounts only.

Why it matters

DES keys fall to offline cracking quickly, so a ticket for this account is far cheaper to break than a modern AES one.

How GraphnAI finds it

It runs after every sync, on each connected domain or tenant on its own. It applies to Active Directory.

It reads:

  • The directory attributes userAccountControl and accountEnabled

Tiered Fidelity™ level: Theoretical

Every finding from this check carries the Theoretical level.

  1. TheoreticalThis checkConfigured in the directory. Nothing else checked.
  2. ConstrainedA constraint on it has been checked.
  3. ValidatedTelemetry has seen it in use.

How Select Fire™ fixes it

How to fix it

Confirm nothing depends on DES. Then clear the DES-only flag and reset the password so the account gets AES keys.

What Select Fire changes

Select Fire opens from the finding and simulates each change on your live graph before anything changes in your directory.

  1. Allow modern Kerberos encryptionSemi-Auto, or Full-Auto when an Admin allows this action and every Full-Auto check passes. Never on a Tier 0 or Tier 1 account.

Clearing the restriction lets the account use modern Kerberos encryption. A client that can only speak the older algorithm stops working with it.

  2. Require a password change For user accounts.Semi-Auto, or Full-Auto when an Admin allows this action and every Full-Auto check passes. Never on a Tier 0 or Tier 1 account.

The account must set a new password at its next logon. A service or scheduled task running as it fails until someone does.
